Kevin Smith Absolutely Flips Out On Joel Siegel
Filed under: Comedy, Celebrities and Controversy, Movie Marketing, Kevin Smith, Remakes and Sequels
The only time I don't feel bad about walking out of a movie is when I'm at a film festival. Sometimes there's something else I really want to see, and sometimes I'm just so dead-tired that my only options are to leave quietly or snore loudly. But when it comes to a movie I know I'm going to review, there's simply no choice: You watch the whole dang thing. And I'm talking about festivals that show films by Larry Clark, Gregg Araki and Catherine Breillat -- so I know what suffering is. And, apparently, so does Joel Siegel.Anyway, here's the story, straight from the keyboard of Kevin Smith himself: There was a recent press screening of Clerks 2 in New York City. Apparently the flick's "ribald" nature did not sit well with the refined and delicate sensibilities of Siegel, he of Good Morning America and hundreds of terrible puns masquerading as movie reviews fame. About 40 minutes into the flick, Siegel decided to bail. (That really is strike one, because, as a movie critic, even a homogenized one like Joel Siegel, the very least that you're required to do is finish a freakin' movie. I sat through all of White Chicks and I didn't make a dime for that review; Joel Siegel can suffer through Clerks 2 for his $200k* a year.)
But it wasn't just enough for Mr. Siegel to simply remove himself from the unbearably offensive film. Allegedly he had to make a huge Costanza-like show of it, harrumphing and stomping up the aisle and announcing (out loud) when the last time he walked out on a movie was. Yes, while maybe a hundred other people were sitting there and watching the movie. Hey, Siegel. What gives? You have one of the cushiest jobs in the whole goofy industry and this is how you behave? Hate the movie if you want to (ugh, but then you'd actually have to watch it first!), but save the tantrums for the playground.
Oh, and here's where it gets fun: Kevin Smith goes absolutely ballistic on Siegel in this blog entry. I know some of you will call not-so-Silent Bob a fool for attacking a critic so vehemently (not to mention publicly), and that's a fair point, but I think he's got every right to call Siegel out in a situation like this. It may not be a director's "place" to call out his critics for their unkind reactions, but it's definitely not a film critic's "place" to behave like a raving idiot in an occupied movie house. Siegel's response to the NY Post goes like this: "It was so foul and mean and repulsive. I finally realized I could not say anything positive ... I wasn't ready for this kind of smut ... I hope he doesn't make any more movies." Poor guy sounds like he just escaped from a Cambodian prison camp.
Either way, it makes for good Clerks 2 press. I'm sure Siegel's pan will keep hundreds of 58-year-old Montana housewives away from the flick.
(* Complete and total guess.)

I was already going to this movie on opening day, but Siegel's pan of the film may make me go twice. I gauge movies based on the opposite of what that overpaid blowhard says, so "Go Kevin".

What Joel Siegel did was the corporate equivalent of storming out of a board of director's meeting, screaming that the CEO is disgusting and vulgar and you hope said CEO never has another board meeting again. Yeah, you might be bored to tears in the board meeting, but you don't make a spectacle of yourself like that if you have any self respect.
On the other hand, this makes for an entertaining story. And I don't think any moviegoers actually have any respect for Siegel anyway. He's just one of those guys they put on morning television for filler.

Wtf?! How dare he say such things about Clerks II. Kevin Smith should curse him out for being such an idiot. And even though I don't know who the hell Joel Siegel is, I think he should go to hell.

What in the hell did Joel Siegel expect? I wonder if he even saw the first one.
Also, he probably added about $2 mil to this movie's b.o. with his little rant.

Kevin Smith was on Opie and Anthony this morning. They called Siegel, got through to him, and discussed it on air. For a good part of the interview Siegel thought he was talking to O&A, not Smith.
Pretty entertaining.

Priceless.
Despite being such an dick, I applaud Joel for publicly confronting him and going along with their remarks during the show. Sure, he didn't apologize, but I waited for him to hang up any second.
Kudos, asshole.

I thought Clerks II was an incredibly sweet movie ... sure, it's dirty, but you'd have to watch it in a very superficial way to describe it as mean and smutty.

Frankly, I'm an old fart (female) and I would rather watch anything with Kevin as I LOVE him and his wry sensibility. Joel Seigel? Is he still alive?!
I wouldn't know as I never watch daytime tv... WHO DOES?!

If Kevin Smith's last several movies are any indication, Joel Siegel is merely calling a spade a spade.
I say this as someone who considers "Mallrats" and "Chasing Amy" to be two of my all-time favorite films, but Kevin Smith has made some VERY crappy movies.
"Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back"? "Jersey Girl"? And this is a writer/director that doesn't work that much. You think people would give Tarrantino "Jersey Girl" after not directing a movie in three years?
Kevin Smith got full of himself and quit making good movies. Simply as that.

Rare stuff, that broadcast. Like anything truly comic, it was just almost tragic. The sex act that flipped the ol' geezer was actually described as something that might happen between two consenting adults unable to control their love for one another. I have no idea why it tripped Siegel's wire. And as everyone will be saying in a few days or so, by leaving early Siegel missed the REALLY offensive part. I thought Jersey Girl was sugary sludge, so I was delighted to see how Smith has bounced back with Clerks 2.

First off, I am gonna see Clerks II. Second, for people to get on Joel Siegel for walking out is just stupid. For a critic of his stature to actually walk out of a movie, it must have been a horrible experience for the guy. Every crap movie, he's seen it. Me, I love movies, any movie I see, I want to like it. I've only walked out on one movie ever and I was really upset about it but the movie, "Being Human" was pure torture. Personally, Kevin Smith may be taking the easy way out doing Clerks II. Maybe he has nothing left. I'm old enough to find out for myself. I just hope it's better than Dogma...that's right...I said it!

Kevin you are the reason I will see this movie a hundred times, buy it, run it out, buy it again and tell my grandchildren about it. I am a huge fan. Thank you for being "the Man" and telling Siegel, exactly what he needs to hear. I commend you and agree firmly with you, Seigel needs a new job.

Kevin Smith is an absolute genius. Anyone has to just see Dogma to know its true. Best piece of comedy and commentary ever made. While Clerks II may not suite Joel Siegals taste what did he expect from Kevin Smith, Gone With The Wind?

As a 47 year old grandmother who can recite Clerks. from beginning to end, I have to say I am really fired up now!! I would rather see Kevin do a few movies with great dialog than watch "insert any top grossing, star studded, 10 sequels to go, don't offend anyone, politically correct, yada, yada, yada" movie 37 times! Kevin keep it up! And Siegel can go hang out at the dirt mall!!!
